From March 10 to 24, art teachers from the public school system can enroll in the third edition of the free online Art in BNCC course, promoted by Instituto Chamex, in partnership with Instituto Arte na Escola (IAE). This initiative aims to help teachers appropriate the Basic National Common Curriculum(BNCC), already implemented in 97% of Brazilian municipalities. The BNCC will be mandatory starting this year and, therefore, the project will contribute to transform the classroom into a space for invention, argumentation, self-knowledge, creativity and critical thinking, among other skills.

Teachers interested in the Art in BNCC Course should register on the website: www.artenaescola.org.br/cursos/bncc. Those who complete the full learning track will receive certification from the Arte na Escola Institute.

Classes will be open as of March 31st for the first 1,500 educators enrolled. The completion period is up to 4 months and teachers can start the modules at any time, each at their own pace, given that the course is self-instructional. With duration of 40 hours and 100% free of charge, the course offers a learning trail that will lead teachers to understand the BNCC in practice, through examples of real projects elaborated by teachers from Brazilian schools – who won the Art in the Citizen School prize.

The educational grid of Art in BNCC is divided in four modules: mapping Art in the BNCC, creation processes, materiality and intertwining the BNCC, and the territories of art. With exclusive videos, interactive resources, engaging documentaries, and supplementary materials, the students will have the opportunity to explore, analyze, and be inspired by the content learned, thus developing competencies and skills focused on creativity and citizenship. In general, the course will prepare teachers to:

  • Learn how to teach with the standards of the Basic National Common Curriculum (BNCC);
  • Become involved in a more inventive way in art classes;
  • Stimulate imagination and creativity in the classroom;
  • Apply incentive strategies for the development of creative students;
  • Stimulate the protagonism of students in art projects aimed at citizenship.

Claudio Anjos, president of IAE, argues that: “Art is a fundamental piece in the school curriculum. With education through art, the student builds expressive and critical repertoire that motivates to propose changes in his trajectory and to his surroundings. Developed countries already realized this and are placing art at the center of their educational policies. We launched this third edition of the Art in the BNCC course precisely so that teachers get to know the Common National Curricular Base and can appropriate it in a creative and transformative way.”

To motivate, inspire and encourage creativity, Instituto Chamex will award kits to be used in classrooms – for the first 100 teachers who complete the course. For Mariana Claudio, executive manager of Instituto Chamex, the partnerships in favor of art and education entail significant transformations: “This is the third year of our partnership with IAE and we are sure it will continue to bring very significant results, aligned with the values and purpose of Instituto Chamex and with the format that we believe is ideal for promoting education, building networks and bridges for change. The executive manager concludes that: “Art inspires and awakens creativity that connects students to learning, bolstering their role in world transformation.”
