A well-drafted text helps to raise the final average of the students in the vestibular and can even serve as a tie-breaker in the dispute for a vacancy. We developed this content to help you, teachers, to plan good writing classes. These are simple and efficient suggestions. Enjoy your reading! =)

1. Join Theory and Practice

The writing class needs to be applied in a theoretical and practical way, ensuring a balance between these two models. Ideally, while students are learning about text structure, grammar, and spelling, they should also be encouraged to experience practice. Giving them space to practice what they are learning is a great precept.

2. Reading Incentive

Encouraging students to make reading a habit is paramount. And this can happen in several ways, either by defining mandatory readings for your classes or recommending works to be enjoyed in their free time. In addition, leading them to read news that are happening in Brazil and in the world is an excellent method to introduce them to the textual universe and to the events and issues that can be triggers for writing topics. But remember: they need to base themselves on the indicated texts or news stories to build their own narratives. Help your class identify valuable references and know how to make the most of each reading. Critical analysis is essential in this construction.

3. Teach the main writing structures

Often the difficulties that some students have when developing a content are related to the textual structure imposed in the exams. The lack of experience in this aspect results in an inadequate writing model proposed for college entrance exams. Most of these exams usually require an argumentative- dissertative text. Therefore, it is essential to present this model in your class, inducing students to prepare content according to this type of text. Also, be sure to present the other main textual styles that may also be required in college entrance exams.

4. Recommend books on writing development

There are many books related to writing skills. Recommend such books so that, in addition to your classes, students can enrich their learning by studying at home. The idea is to work with works that detail theoretical aspects and, consequently, help students apply these concepts in the model texts produced during your classes. This is a way to accelerate learning, practice and improve writing skills.

You can also recommend podcasts, YouTube videos, and good articles available on the Internet and on Instagram and Tik Tok pages. These channels are very attractive to young people and can foster interest in pursuing knowledge. Find reliable sources, filter and select them, and recommend them to your students.

5. Present good writing templates

It is essential to present good writing models so that students have real references to read and follow. A great way to do this is to look for well-evaluated writings in previous college entrance exams, be it ENEM (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio – National High School Exam) or the other main tests that take place in the country. Fortunately, both the MEC (Ministry of Education) and most higher education institutions make these assessments available to be downloaded, which makes it easier – and much easier – to guide students preparing for the college exams.

6. Work using mock writings

Another practical and effective way to encourage your students to practice writing is to apply mock writings during a few classes. Other than in practical activities, the idea is to present a theme, supporting texts, and have the students write as if they were on a real exam, with rules and time limits, according to the standards of most College entrance exams. When correcting the writings, use the same criteria as in the College entrance exams. This enables to provide individualized guidance for each student’s hits and misses.

7. Keep your students tuned on possible themes

Preparing students for the practical part of the vestibular is the foundation for them to be able to deal with the model of text construction proposed in the College entrance exams. However, as already pointed out, it is important to guide them about the subjects that may become themes for the College entrance exam writings. This can be done, for instance, by encouraging them to read daily news and to be aware of current discussions, even bringing these topics and debates into the classroom – it turns the classroom into a space for critical thinking and citizenship.
